Dr. Jernej Zupanc • Visual Communication of Science
Communication is my professional passion. I specialize in visually presenting complex ideas in a way that makes them easy to understand for diverse audiences.
I developed The Seyens Method™, a science-based approach to visual communication tailored for scientists. It simplifies the process of designing visual materials, ensuring that complex messages are easily understood. The Seyens Method is straightforward to learn and can be immediately applied to communicate any complex idea in nearly any visual format.
The best way to learn The Seyens Method is to attend one of my workshops. These are hosted by renowned research institutions primarily in Europe, but also in 24 countries worldwide since 2013. Initially popular at universities, The Seyens Method is now being embraced by scientists in the private sector as well, from startups to Fortune 500 companies, who are realizing its immense value.
Although my primary focus is on visual communication, I also draw on best practices from various fields, including management consulting, persuasion, psychology, marketing, graphic design, photography, and journalism. For each approach, I evaluate whether it works and how it can help my clients improve their communication.
From my work across diverse environments such as research, engineering, policy, and business, and through Seyens training, I have engaged with thousands of scientists from various disciplines. This experience has honed my ability to quickly grasp scientific and complex concepts and view them from multiple perspectives. In my coaching and training, I aim not only to solve immediate problems but also to help clients understand the rationale behind design decisions, empowering them to enhance all future communications.
It’s relevant to mention that I have a background in research. I hold a PhD in computer science, specializing in biomedical image analysis, and was a Fulbright scholar at Northeastern University in Boston. After my return from the USA, I wrote a manual on preparing Fulbright proposals, which has since assisted over 100,000 applicants from 209 countries.
From 2013 to 2016, I served as an evaluator for EU H2020 research and innovation proposals and later worked as a consultant and grant writer. I independently secured over €3M in grant funding and contributed to the successful acquisition of an additional €20M in grants while working with Zaz Ventures.
